Santa Anita racetrack is debuting a new racing surface today and as the park reopens after Christmas, there's a lot of excitement around the racetrack.
“There’s a buzz here for this opener, for sure,” veteran trainer Barry Abrams said to the media. “There are higher purses, a new racetrack, good or bad. It’s something new, so it’s exciting. It’s like buying a new car and you can’t wait to get behind the wheel to drive it.”
The track is dirt and that's different from the synthetic surface that used to be installed at Santa Anita and the reception has been overwhelmingly positive.
“It’s the difference between square wheels and round wheels,” Karen Headley said to the media. “When you ride a horse on synthetics, it’s like riding on square wheels. When you ride on dirt, it’s a smooth, flowing forward ride, rather than a jarring ride.”
