BYU 31, UTEP 10
ALBUQUERQUE — BYU freshman Jake Heaps threw three touchdown passes to lead the Cougars to a 31-10 advantage at halftime of the New Mexico Bowl Saturday in University Stadium.
Heaps threw scoring strikes of 9, 31 and 3 yards to Cody Hoffman and Luke Ashworth and completed passes to 10 different receivers as BYU outgained UTEP 286 to 80 yards in the first two quarters. Heaps broke Ty Detmer's BYU school record for a freshman with 14 touchdown passes to this point in his rookie season.
J.J. DiLuigi led BYU's rushers with 58 yards on 11 carries.
UTEP's only touchdown came on a 67-yard bomb from Trevor Vittatoe to Kris Adams with 8:38 to play in the first half and the Miners had the ball with four seconds left in the half and could not score.
